In 1985 the Fox Theater closed its doors for the last time, ending an almost century-long run as a mainstay of culture for the greater Stevens Point community. Almost thirty years later, with the Sanders family’s recent donation, we are on the verge of reclaiming this landmark and the sense of life it provided to the downtown. For decades now, The Fox on Main has been the greatest source of collective daydreaming for both the residents and the ex-pats of Stevens Point. What Pointer hasn’t fully planned out its reopening, reclaiming old memories or envisioning a new purpose for the lost stage somewhere behind that iconic façade? This has become our mission—to honor, to capture, and to fulfill the best visions for the Fox in hopes that such realized energy will pour out from the theater and down the streets that reach out from the heart of our town.
“. . .to honor, to capture, and to fulfill the best visions for the Fox in hopes that such realized energy will pour out from the theater and down the streets that reach out from the heart of our town.”
Reopening the Fox is more than an opportunity to restore an old building. It is a challenge to invest in our community—an opportunity to restore and redefine our downtown in hopes of highlighting the culture and history of this unique place. Like most American communities, Stevens Point is in an era of transition. We are coming out of the 2008 recession having shifted. Old industries have disappeared. New complexes and roadways have refocused the life-patterns of our region. We have broken the ground of long-worked farm fields to construct new sources of revenue in the form of medical, business, and retail facilities. In no region is this transition more evident than the downtown, where the redevelopment of the mall has provided a rare opportunity to re-imagine the atmosphere and the purpose of our community.
It is at this ripe moment that The Fox on Main has fallen back into our hands, and we see this opportunity before us as a perfect tool to bridge the rich history of our town with the collective hopes for its future. The Fox on Main—with its unique architecture, its prime location, and its varied uses—is a puzzle piece that can uniquely satisfy those goals. It is our hope that this site will provide interested community members both with the history and the vision governing our mission to reopen The Fox on Main.
